Community Rating System

The CRS is a program within the NFIP or the National Flood Insurance Program, which creates a financial incentive for communities to lower NFIP flood insurance premiums by “going above and beyond” the minimum requirements for NFIP eligibility. The CRS is a “win-win” program because it reduces a community’s vulnerability to floods while reducing the cost of flood insurance premiums for all policy holders in that jurisdiction.

As a result, flood insurance premium rates are discounted to reflect the reduced flood risk resulting from the community actions meeting the three goals of the CRS:

1. Reduce flood damage to insurable property;

2. Strengthen and support the insurance aspects of the NFIP, and

3. Encourage a comprehensive approach to floodplain management.

The City of Hialeah currently holds a class 7 certification in the CRS program. What this essentially means to the residents of Hialeah is a 15% flood insurance premium reduction for those properties within the Special Flood Hazard Area and a 5% reduction for those properties outside the Special Flood Hazard Areas better known as the Preferred Risk Policies.
