A Healthier Hialeah
Complete Streets in Hialeah
The City of Hialeah was awarded $80,000 from the Health Foundation of South Florida (HFSF) to implement a project in support of Complete Streets. This project entitled A Healthier Hialeah focuses on policy design and advocacy for system changes to the city’s built environment, resulting in a more pedestrian-friendly community.

Complete Streets accommodate pedestrians, bicyclists, transit, and cars, creating multi-modal transportation networks. Accommodating these needs leads to stronger local economies, protects the environment, and contributes to a healthier community.
With these funds, the City of Hialeah will incorporate a Complete Streets Policy that addresses mobility and connectivity as part of the City’s Comprehensive Plan.

Hialeah Market District
The City is in the process of amending the Comprehensive Plan to create a Transit Oriented Development (TOD) land use designation. The TOD land use designation is intended to promote and encourage mobility and connectivity within the district as well as to and from transit stations for pedestrians, bicycles and automobiles. This designation is restricted to locations within a half-mile of Tri-Rail stations in the City of Hialeah. The first TOD will be located in the southeast area of the City next to the Hialeah Market tri-rail station.

Some benefits of TOD are reduced auto traffic congestion and better air quality. Studies indicate that TOD can reduce traffic congestion and air pollution by up to 25 to 50 percent compared to typical suburban development. A Healthier Hialeah will examine the link between city planning and health issues such as obesity and propose solutions that will remain with the community for many years. This initiative will promote New Urbanism principles, human-oriented architecture, and best practices to create a safer, more walkable community and produce changes which promote and encourage active living.
