MDCPS, City of Hialeah, and Best Buddies partner on City of Hialeah Project SEARCH & Project VICTORY

In 2006, city staff observed Miami-Dade County Public School’s (MDCPS) Project SEARCH transition program for students from 18 to 22, designed to develop employment skills, self-determination, self-management and self-advocacy skills. The District’s transition programs are implemented through partnerships with host agencies, Vocational Rehabilitation, and Best Buddies Jobs. The City of Hialeah brought both Project VICTORY and Project SEARCH to its community and has since hosted over 150 students. Both programs supported the City’s initiative to further opportunities for the special needs population by emphasizing the development of skills necessary for employment. Participants work in City facilities and departments, ranging from the Mayor’s office to the Fleet Maintenance garage and gain work experience and self-confidence, while contributing greatly to each department’s mission.
