Business Fire Safety

The fire prevention needs of a business are determined by different factors associated with each individual business. There are several regulations that are common to all businesses. These regulations are found in the publications that are used to enforce federal, state, and local government fire codes. Listed below are a few of the most common regulations.

  1. You are required to have a 5 lb class A-B-C fire extinguisher for each 2,500 square feet or any part thereof of floor space. For example: If you have 2,500 sq. ft. you need one (1) fire extinguisher.  If you have 2,501 sq. ft. you need two (2) fire extinguishers. Each extinguisher must be mounted properly, easily accessible, easy to see, and CERTIFIED annually by a trained and licensed extinguisher technician who will place a certification tag on the extinguisher.
  2. If you are a restaurant or cook food in a business, you are required to have a dry chemical hood system over your stoves.  They also must be CERTIFIED every six months.
  3. Exits must be identified by easily visible and lighted signs that have battery backups to provide lighting in an emergency. These exits must be as far from each other as is practical.
  4. All exits must be clear of all obstructions or storage so that they will provide a direct and prompt exit of the building if necessary.
  5. If your business exceeds 10,000 square feet, you are required to have a fire alarm system in the building. This alarm is to be CERTIFIED yearly.
  6. If your business exceeds 15,000 square feet, you are required to have an automatic sprinkler system also.  This system is to be CERTIFIED yearly.
  7. If you use or store hazardous materials or chemicals you are required to provide a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for each of those chemicals. Your supplier can provide those information sheets. Depending on the type of hazards involved you may require other safety features.
  8. Accumulations of paper, boxes, wood, tires and debris inside and outside the building are fire hazards and should be removed.  Keeping your business clean helps prevent fires.
  9. Extension cords that are overloaded, over 6 feet in length, or used instead of permanent wiring that should be enclosed in conduit will not be allowed. Make sure that your wiring is up to date and properly installed.
