American Red Cross Certified Lifeguard Training courses are available for those aged 15 years old and up, year-round at Milander and Bucky Dent Aquatic Centers. All persons successfully completing the course, a minimum of 38 hours, receive an American Red Cross Certification. Those aged 17 and over, are eligible for employment with the City of Hialeah Recreation and Community Services Department.
The course is composed of Lifeguard Training, Community CPR and First Aid. Class activities include practical and written examinations. All course students must pass a pre-test and must successfully complete the following:
- 500 yards continuously, without stopping, using these strokes in the following order.
- 200 yards of front crawl, using rhythmic breathing and a stabilized, propellant kick. Rhythmic breathing can be performed either by breathing to the side or to the front.
- 100 yards of breaststroke.
- 200 yards of either front crawl, using rhythmic breathing or breaststroke. These 200 yards may be a combination of front crawl or breaststroke.
- Swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive to a depth of 7 to 10 feet, retrieve a 10 pound object, return to the surface, and swim back to the starting point.
The course fee of $150 includes America Red Cross course materials and instruction.
All participants who take the Lifeguard Training course are recommended to apply with the City of Hialeah. A full reimbursement of the course is available to those who take the course and are hired by the City of Hialeah.
