The Hialeah Police Department Canine Unit is composed of one Sergeant, five Officers and their K-9 partners. All six K-9s are Male Belgian Malinois imported from Holland, who live and work with the handler. These canines are all trained police work dogs to perform: criminal apprehension, tracking, outdoor area search, building search and evidence searches. In addition, four of the dogs are cross trained for Narcotics Detection.
Hialeah is a dynamic city, with a cross-section of industrial warehouse districts, retail establishments, residential single family homes and apartment complexes. Our K-9 unit stays very busy with a high volume of area, building and narcotic searches. In an average year, our unit conducts 250 building searches, 1800 area searches, 170 narcotics searches and apprehends over 150 felons.
All handlers and their K-9 partners are available at any time to assist other agencies when requested. The unit also enjoys conducting K-9 demonstrations and honors requests by local schools, civic groups and for other special occasions.
