- How old must I be to obtain a library card?
You can obtain your library card at any time. However, if you are under 16 years of age, you must apply with your parent or legal guardian and they must have the required documents.
- What happens if I lose my library card?
Please report a lost card to the Library’s Circulation Desk as soon as possible. You will need to present photo identification in order for a new card to be issued. Replacement cards are subject to a charge of $2.00.
- Why am I limited two materials of a specific subject or type?
The Hialeah Library Division serves a patron base of more than 82,319. Due to heavy demand for materials, patrons are limited to two books on the same subject, author, or two of the same type of materials. For example, you may take out only two videos at one time, or two books on fly fishing in Florida.
- May I borrow books with my spouse’s or other family member’s library card?
Cards are issued to patrons on an individual basis and use is limited to the cardholder. Parents are permitted to check out books on their child’s card, as they are responsible for materials borrowed.
- Can I return my videos, audiocassettes, CD’s, and DVD’s in the book drops?
No. Videos, audiocassettes (or books-on-tape) and CDs are delicate materials and may be damaged if returned through the book drops located in the Library’s parking lot. Only books may be returned through the book drop. Videos, audiocassettes and CDs are to be returned to the Circulation Desk.
- Where are the science projects?
The science project books are located in the Children’s Room in the JFK Library. The North, West, and Curtiss e-Libraries also have science project books. Check for copy availability and locations at each branch.
- Do you have the books on my child’s reading list?
Most often, the librarians first see school reading lists when children and their parents arrive at the Library to look for the books. To verify if the library has the titles on the list, please search the online catalog.
- May the children use the adult area of the JFK Library?
Children under 12 are permitted to use the computers located next to the Reference Area under the supervision of a parent. Children are permitted in all other locations of the library if their behavior does not disturb our fellow patrons. Parents, of course, are always welcome in the Children’s Room.
- Is there a quiet place where I can study at the JFK Library?
It is every staff members’ wish to provide a scholarly and peaceful environment at the JFK Library. However, certain architectural restrictions make this goal difficult to sustain. The second floor offers study carrels and tables away from high use areas. Patrons engaged in-group works are encouraged to use the auditorium when available.
- How do I search for a magazine/journal article on my subject?
There are three ways to conduct a subject search of periodical literature at the JFK Library:- From our library’s homepage, under Research Tools, you may access one of the online databases such as Electric Library or the Florida Electronic Library. Both databases allow patrons to search for full text articles. Included in the Florida Electronic Library collection is ¡Informe!, which provides full text articles from Spanish language publications.
- On the index table in the Reference Department, you will find a series of green volumes entitled Readers’ Guide to Periodical Literature. Search for your subject throughout these volumes and note the periodical title, volume and issue numbers or dates, and page number for your article. Then, take your list to the Reference Desk to determine if these periodicals are available.
- Please be aware that the Library maintains a limited periodical collection.
- How do I sign up to use a computer at the JFK Library?
You must have your Hialeah Library Division Library card with you in order to use a computer. You will find sign-sheets at all computer sections. If a computer is not being used, sign your name and time for the computer you want (each computer has a number). Make sure to place your library card on top of the computer monitor after you have signed in. If all the computers are in use, please sign your name on the waiting list and you will be called promptly.
- Is there a time limit for use of the computers?
Computer use is limited to 30 minutes when patrons are awaiting for access.
- Do you have access to the Internet?

You may purchase laser printer paper from the Circulation Desk at a cost of 15 cents per page. You may also bring your own paper but it must be laser printer quality to safeguard the equipment.
- Do you have color printers?
The Reference Desk has one color printer; patrons may request a color printout on a cost recovery basis of $1.00 per page.
- Where are the bathrooms located at the JFK Library?
There are two sets of bathrooms. Adult bathrooms are located past the elevator and across from the auditorium. Children’s bathrooms are located in the Children’s Room.
- Where are the photocopy machines located at JFK Library?

- Why can’t I use my cellular phone in the Library?
Our library policies prohibit the use of cell phones, radios, beepers, televisions, and other electronic equipment that can be a nuisance to others. In order to provide a quiet study environment, we ask that you respect this policy.
- Why can’t I eat or drink while I’m studying in the Library?
The Library tries to safeguard its holdings by limiting damage to its materials. While eating or drinking (even bottled water), accidents may occur to materials of our circulating and reference collections. Also, crumbs and sugars from drinks attract pest infestations, which, in turn, cause irreparable damage to the collection.
