Council Vice-President Jose Yedra

Jose Yedra was born in Havana, Cuba. He got his early education at Havana’s Bravo Academy and went to high school at the Vibora Institute. Afterwards he studied drama, broadcasting, arts and sculptor at the renowned San Alejandro Art School.

After completing his education, Jose worked as an actor and announcer at C.M.Q. Radio and Television in Havana, Cuba and at the Sabates Company, an affiliate of Procter and Gamble. He studied to become a physical education professor at Cuba’s National Institute of Physical Education (INEF) and he was on the Cuban National Volleyball Team. He participated in two Pan-American games and in a World Championship in Paris.

Jose came to the United States in 1963.  He lived in New York, where he worked in a bakery and movie theater for three years. He later moved to Puerto Rico where he stared as one of the main actors of the Oscar Dulzaide’s movie, "Los que Nunca Amaron" with Ana Luisa Pelufo, and Guillermo Murray. He continued living in Puerto Rico, where he worked in a large array of soap operas and movies, reaching high popularity in those genres. Jose received several awards such as: El Yunque de Oro, El Cordero de Plata and other prestigious accolades. He later went to Guatemala where he acted in a movie entitled "Asilo Politico" with Rozzano Brazzi, Cameron Mitchel and El Indio Fernadez, and in Mexico "Los Ricachones y Los Pobretones."

After completing these movies, he moved to Miami and worked as a Spanish Language News Anchor for Channel 23, for five years. After this, he became the protagonist of the first soap opera filmed in Hialeah called "Santa Barbara" with Lilia Lazo. He later created Miavision, the first spanish cable television channel in the United States, which studios were located in Hialeah. He received the A.C.E. award for his efforts in the television cable company. Jose also received the Mr. Television award and participated as a news anchor and executive for Channel 51 in Miami. Afterwards he went to Washington D.C. as a news anchor for TV Marti. In 1995, he returned to Hialeah and was elected to the Hialeah City Council.

Currently, Jose Yedra is serving as Councilman in the City of Hialeah and is President of Dapep. He is married to Dalia E.Yedra, a State Certified Insurance Agent. He has two daughters, Martha Elizabeth and Maria Elena, and a grandson named Alexander Vergara.
