Council Member Isis Garcia-Martinez

Councilwoman Isis Garcia-Martinez was born in Havana Cuba on May 18th, 1967, like many Cubans at the time her parents fled the island due to the Castro Regime. She left Cuba at the mere age of 11 ½ months old. She went on to live in Spain and New York City before arriving at our great City of Hialeah in 1969. She was raised by her mother Hilda Sanz a single parent and architect graduate from Havana who as many Cubans, gave up her career to work in a factory in search of the “American Dream”.

Isis grew up in the City of Hialeah and went to school at the well known and respected Edison Private School. She attended Hialeah Senior High and is a graduate of Miami Springs Senior High. She also attended Miami Dade College and Barry University.

At a very early age, community activities allowed her to meet many local elected officials and community leaders such as Herman Echevarria, Rolando Blanco, Lolo Villalobos, former Mayor Raul Martinez and many others. At the age of 18 she met her husband Alexis who introduced her to politics, she was immediately drawn to politics and that same year (1987) she was married, became an American Citizen, a registered voter in the Republican Party and a candidate for the Hialeah City Council. Although she was unsuccessful, she pursued her dream and in 1991, Isis was elected to a 4 year term. For the first time in 1991, (3) women were in office in the city, it was then she was inspired by the strength and courage of one of her mentors Commissioner Natacha Seijas a respected leader in this community.

Councilwoman Garcia dedicated her years in and out of office to our Senior Community, Early Education and Healthcare. She has worked in the Healthcare field for over 20 years where she has been an advocate for Community Programs geared towards Healthcare and Senior Citizens. She has worked in several hospitals throughout the years such as South Miami, Hialeah Hospital and she is well known for her many years of service and dedication to Palm Springs General Hospital where she specialized in outreach and marketing. Isis was appointed by former Miami-Dade County Mayor Alex Penelas to the Miami-Dade County Health Task Force where she was recognized for her assistance and input towards creating solutions to our healthcare crisis. She participated in local schools as a motivational speaker addressing children and was instrumental in raising funds for special programs in our local schools.

In 1995 the councilwoman lost her re-election, she continued her involvement in the community and decided to run again unsuccessfully in 1997. Isis established her own business (Ideal (HRS) Medicine Program) in 2001. Her dedication and commitment to her business has assisted over 5000 families in our community as well as throughout the United States, obtaining free medication, diabetic supplies, healthcare awareness and advocacy.

She continued her community involvement and 10 years later, she and her family decided to come all out for another mentor, then the council President and now Mayor Julio Robaina. Her involvement in that campaign aroused the love for politics and she decided to run for Hialeah City Council once again. This time, after being out of office for 12 years, Isis was re-elected and was sworn in on November 26th, 2007.

Isis has been married for 21 years to Alexis Martinez she has 2 children of her own Alexis Jr. 19, Christian Frank 15, stepson Michael Alexander 22, a mixed Labrador/Terrier “Billete” and his companion a cat named “Mimi”.
